This is my first topic I've made. I don't normally make topics but I thought this would be a good idea. I've talked to some people about aMOTION. They said that some of the true meanings to the songs were exactly diffrent from what they thought. I always like to hear other peoples opinions and what they think a song was about. So this thread is for people to tell what they thought a meaning of a song was after bein told diffrently by Maynard.
I thought The Noose was about Jesus at first. With Maynard talking about Halos and amends to the dead. Kinda hard to describe but that's what I thought after hearing The Noose. And once I heard Maynards emphasis on the song it made more sence. So has anyone else here had thier own meaning to a song by Tool or APC?

The Noose was one song that I actually had the correct interpretation of. Although I hate to say "correct". Anyone's interpretations of songs is "correct" if it means something to them. But as far as what Maynard said about the songs, yea I had The Noose pegged.
3 Libras threw me. I thought it was about someone who didn't see him for who he was. Someone who only saw the outer person and didn't bother to see the person inside.
I've long had my own meaning to Pet. We all know what it is about, I know what it is about. But I can't get past it (in my mind) being about a child molester. From personal experience it just reaks of what someone would say to a child they are molesting. Trying to get their trust, "Lay your head down child I won't let the boogeyman come". "Pay no mind to the rabble" to me is don't pay attention to what you are thinking, that something is wrong. "I'll be the one to protect you from A will to survive and a voice of reason" is the aftermath the molester leaves you with. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that.

I like your meanings to it. Your meaning to Pet makes alot of sence when I think about it. Your reasons connect in alot of ways. I like that. I don't really know what Maynard means by "Pay no mind to the rabble". 3 Libra's i agree with. I thought it was about not bein noticed at all and i also thought it was about bein overlooked on the inside

I think this interpretation still makes sense. The video really seems to tie into this too, imo. I thought the song was about groupies (and maybe the media) only seeing him as a rock star & just using him (although he uses the groupies too and doesn't seem to mind ).

I didn't think it was about groupies. I doubt he gives a rats ass what they think of him. Groupies want one thing: to fuck a rockstar and the rockstars know this. I thought it was more about a person who was closer to him.

Nope, According to Maynard it's about someone who has recovred from a addiction or problem. And they wear it as a crown. Completley forgetting what they put thier loved ones through. Bassiclly saying don't let your halo choke you. Pretty much saying good for you that you recovred from your problem but don't get too hyped in it. Well that's what I got after hearing Maynard's words on it

a few of my fav. songs
THINKING OF YOU - kind of threw me....although i always thought the lyrics "tugging rythms to the vision thats in my head" always referenced masturbation...but yeah me and a friend were kind a bummed to hear mjk say "yeah we kinda rushed to throw this one together" when i think and my friend thought it had a deeper meaning....
What ive learned is u got not care what it means to mjk...i mean sometimes the music lifts me higher when i interpret his music the way he was writing it...if that makes sense....but yeah i was right about The Noose and others...
PUSHIT- This songs means so much to me....i interpret it as loving someone so much and them loving you and then something fucked up happen that everything has to go....growing....theres no love in fear...someone fearing another person not loving them....it just represents pure emotional attatchment and then coming to terms that you must terminate the relationship and grow...but being terrified at the same time..."terrified of what may come"...ooo chills....
H. - To me its simple. Loving a person...relationships...being connected to someone so much but not having them in your life..."days away i still feel you...touching me...changing me..consideratley killing me"...the other person is not doing the killing on purpose but the effect of what that person has done is still morphing the other person here today...for so long ive wanted to get "I am too connected to you to slip away, to fade away" tattooed somewhere on my body...probably my most favorite lyric of all time....and i think the verse where mjk sings "without the skin here, beneath the storm" is how i felt without a former loved one....just vulnerable...this song touches me on sooo many different levels....

THINKING OF YOU my friend thought it had a deeper meaning.... LMAO! It did have a deeper meaning. Sorry. I'll make a proper post later. My eye (and sick mind) always has to catch any anal references.

I'm sure most people probably know what "The Package" is about. Most people think it is about wanting and craving a drug. But I put my own interpretation on it.
My interpretation of the song may be that it's about the deepest part of human nature, the part that no one admits to. The way I see this song is that it's about the part of us that only cares about quenching our thirst for what we want, no matter what happens to other people. "Clever got me this far, then tricky got me in. Eye on what I'm after, I don't need another friend. Smile and drop the cliche, till you think I'm listening. Take just what I came for, then I'm out the door again." He'll smile, drop the cliche, say whatever he must, be clever, tricky and even lie to get what he wants. His eye is on what he's after, and he doesn't care about hurting other people to get it. He peripherally longs the package, he doesn't go straight in for it, he dances around his final destination until he has the victim of his game caught in his trap. At this point his voice changes to a more aggressive one. This may indicate that he knows he has reached his ultimate consummation and can now drop the facade. Here he might be getting impatient and he now knows that he has the person right where he wants them so he just asks for it directly. After he gets what he wants he then just leaves. He has what he wants, and he then has no use for the person. He then justifies it because he was only taking what was his. He only asked for what was already his. And he ends the song with him trying to set himself at ease by whispering "This is mine, mine, mine..."
I got that after listening to it after awhile.

Ditto. I thought 3 Libras was about trying to be obvious about liking a girl and you do all these things to get her to notice you because she as beautiful as an angel. And you don't know it, but secretly her entire life as been a tragedy behind the scenes. Everybody thinks that she is stuck up or rude, but really she can't see anyone else because she has so many problems of her own. And you are crazy about her just the same no matter how many times she looks through you. Ha Imagine my suprise when I watched the comments on the DVD..........
