This was on the TOOL page....anyone wanna help me understand what he[s saying and where?
MESSAGE IN "NO QUARTER" ON TOOL'S SALIVAL "Dear Blair, I I'll try not to babble or run on, I realize you have a lot of these to read, so here goes. I have discovered a subliminal message in the song No Quarter on the Salival CD/DVD, I have had several friends listen to it, so I know I'm not just hearing things, or wishing I were. However, we all share one thing in common: none of us can discern what it is that Maynard is saying. I was wondering if you would do me a considerable kindness and either a. Tell me what it says, or b. tell me where I can find out and how."
THE REPLY:
Just in case there's somebody living in a cave who doesn't know about this, lots of people have attempted to isolate the so-called subliminal message (whispered by MJK while in the recording studio and not in his well-stocked wine celler) via high tech audio equipment, and some have posted their findings on the internet. Although I've yet to read a single posting that contains the correct answer, there's always a chance that someone has discerned the actual message, and that I've missed his/her posting. However, since I have received hundreds of emails over the years asking about the message, I am happy to address this issue. First of all, my advice to anyone interested or obsessing over this matter is that I wouldn't waste too much time tryiing to figure it out. That's because the message is NOW totally irrelevant. Secondly, in my reply here, I have given the answer as to what is being said, albeit somewhat cryptically - but it's all right here in these very words. But, like I said, it's now irrelevant, so let's move on, shall we.

It could have been a typo, but there are two I's in "trying," but like Blair himself said, why bother obsessing over it?

I'd like to help you money.....but I just don't really care. Blair gets everyone all worked up with the cryptic crap and deciphering shit. I'm not going along with it anymore. Besides....what could possibly be so important about this "subliminal message"? MJK's probably just saying, "I love to fuck with you people and watch you all go nuts trying to figure it out". ;D

I didn't see anything that Blair posted that says that. But still, I'm just really not that concerned with what Maynard's "subliminal" message is. It probably just has something to do with Danny's sweaty balls. (Never mind....it's an inside joke.) By all means though....dig away and find the truth my son!

This is a cover of a Led Zepplin song by the same name, which appeared on Houses Of The Holy and alluded to parts of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic, The Lord of The Rings. The Tool rendition, however, has different lyrics, changing or omitting many of the links that the original had with Tolkiens story. If we take it that, like the original, Tools performance refers to a difficult and desperate journey though, that might just be enough to be satisfied, but if you want to look further, an analysis of the alterations is in order. It's been suggested that the Tool rework might refer to the Vietnam War term ˜no quarter, used to indicate the death of soldier or inescapable, deadly position. Though there's no formal evidence to support it, taking the song in such a light could paint a dream for me and you in the light of the U.S.s' obsession with stamping out communism around the world at that time.
Support for this idea might or might not be found in the near-inaudible whispers at 5:14 (radical reasoning) and 5:34 (so many lives, so many minds that are more important). There is much more obscure whispering throughout the song (specifically between 4:30-5:10 and 5:15- 6:20) but I have no firm idea of what is being said.

Someone told me once that Danny only has one nut. It was probably someone "quoting" the 'Nard. Maynard used the one nut joke a few times during the APC tour. I know one night Billy only had one and another night Josh only had one. If I remember correctly good ol' Nard was trying to take up donations (of balls) to help the poor one ball guys out.

A guy at TA posted a lengthy board about all the equipment he used and did all of this to "No Quarter":
1. cut out all low end. 2. cut out all midrange. 3. cranked up all high end. 4. cranked up the amount of my filter. 5. cranked up the width of my filter. 6. cranked up and down the resonance on my filter for about 10 minutes. 7. returned resonance to original setting and realized its best not to mess with. 8. listened at high and low volumes. 9. panned hard left and hard right. 10. adjusted gain up some more. 11. and finally, swept up and down with the low cut on my filter.
After all that he says he heard what MJK was whispering. Although he wouldn't post what it was since he wanted people to find out on their own. I did get it out of him.
I checked around with some others because I couldn't believe this was it, but I got the same answer.
Supposedly he says, "Kill Yourself".

i REALLY dont think MJK says KILL YOURSELF...
after letting this go for a while.....i thought BMB say it was a message that has no relevance anymore..
KILL YOURSELF is not really a message that i think could have or had relevance...did i lose you? i hope not....
im just saying intuitivley i believe mjk said something more relevant thank KILL YOURSELF...so who wants to help me look

Well, there are several people at TA that, after studying this, do believe that is what he is saying. If this is true, it could tie in with what B posted. "It's been suggested that the Tool rework might refer to the Vietnam War term ˜no quarter, used to indicate the death of soldier or inescapable, deadly position."If a soldier in the Vietnam War was in an "inescapable, deadly position", "kill yourself" may fit with that. Kill yourself before you are unmercifully tortured? Also, it not being relevant anymore would fit, since the Vietnam war is over. I really have no idea. I'm blowing smoke here. And, honestly, I really don't care.
