I was just wondering what some of your interpretations are for this song. What do you feel 11 has to do with? Especially in this stanza:
Hold your light, Eleven. Lead me through each gentle step by step By inch by loaded memory 'till one and one are one, eleven, So glow, child, glow.
Perhaps one and one are his soul and body reuniting. Im not sure.

"one and one": 11
Some people say it's about maynard when he was 11. It surely is about a union of two parts, to form only one, but what or whom, it's hard to guess.

i know what the song IS NOT about....for a while i heard jimmy can be interepreted and associated with the terror attacks of 9/11...gimme a sec
"What was like to see the face of your own stability suddenly look away, leaving you with the dead and hopeless? " - America thought it was completley stable and free from any kind of attacks...but for me i interperet it like, "what was it like to find out that ur stability is no longer there? ur left with the dead and hopeless...."
I dunno...i also heard the theory its about mjk when he was 11...but i dunno....what is 1 X 1? it equals one....'till one and one are one.....i think hes just referencing that we need to come together...ya know..love one other to reunite and prosper

There are 11 letters in Jesus Christ "Till one,and one are one , eleven" could be refering to the Trinity "Heading back home" retuning back to Heaven ? I think this , as well as all of MJK's lyrics , has multable deminson's so that there is no 1 right interpretation Here's a view I found off the web that I think has some relevance (This was written in 1997)
… adulthood Interpretations for Jimmy should be taken very openly, with a grain of salt if you will, and I will try to be vague, as the lyrics are deliberately. Things to keep in mind are: Jimmy is a nickname for James. Maynard’s birth name was James Herbert Keenan (now Maynard James Keenan). Maynard grew up in Ravenna, Ohio, USA . Maynard’s mother is not dead, as was printed incorrectly in Rolling Stone magazine. Jimmy seems to be the union of a man with his child self. The fact that “jimmy” is in lowercase in the linear notes implies that Maynard in his youth, but I really don’t think the song is about him, at least not necessarily. “Eleven and she was gone/Eleven is when we waved goodbye” means the child lost his mother, or at least a mother-figure, in some way when he was eleven. Since then he has been, in some sense, frozen in time, “standing still. ”Perhaps he has been mentally traumatized and can’t move on, unable to grow and become whole as an adult. The lyrics certainly paint bleak scenery. “Under a dead Ohio sky.” “Leaving you with the dead and hopeless.”
Also, the fact that he is “defending his light and wondering ‘where the hell have I been’” gives me a picture of a boy struggling to hold on, though he feels alone and abandoned. As an adult he realizes his lost child-self, and wants to go back and save him. Somehow he is shown “where it all began.”
Perhaps returning home stirs up old feelings, or maybe he has repressed memories of youth that traces back to his lossat eleven.Since then his mind has been “sleeping, lost and numb,” but still he has felt some kind of draw to the source or his despair, or whatever he feels. “It took so long to realise you hold the light that’s been drawing me back home.” The fact that his inner self still holds the light, still glows, shows that there is still hope of getting back. The adult gets back to the child with each “step by step, by inch by loaded memory,” going back perhaps to repressed memories. He has resolved himself and won’t stop until “one [man] and one [boy] are one [being].” He tells his inner youth-self to shine bright so they may do this, so he will be “heading back home.”

Thanks, Guys. It looks like those took a lot of thought and time to come up with. Very enlightening. Perhaps, you may find it odd that the name Lucifer means "to bring light" I wonder if there is anything in this song that has to do with this? I think one of the reasons I love TOOL so much is that I never quite know what Maynard is really singing about. It can be interpreted in so many ways, reaching everyone in its own way.

thats some over analyzing right there. this song is about timmy leaving home when he was 11 to reunite with his father. he left from ohio (under a dead ohio sky) and reunited with his father and he became complete. also for the longest time i thought 46 and 2 was about him and his son. but when i matched the ages they didn't add up so reading a book called "nothing in this book is true, but it's exactly the way things are" helped me realize what this song is truly about.

The beauty of art is it's willingness to be over analyzed - point being that none of us are EVER going to know what his lyrics truly mean. MJK is known for his sense of sarcasm so even his meanings of lyrics should be taken with a grain of salt Also , this isn't APC.net so you don't have to use the "timmy" epitaph

I think instead of people trying to interpret what Maynard is saying, they should focus on what the song is saying to them. You should intrepret the songs as to how they make you feel and what they mean to you. Also , this isn't APC.net so you don't have to use the "timmy" epitaph

Number Eleven possesses the qualities of intuition, patience, honesty, sensitivity, and spirituality, and is idealistic. Others turn to people who are 'Eleven' for teaching and inspiration, and are usually uplifted by the experience. In systems such as Astrology and basic Numerology, eleven is considered to be a Master Number. Eleven can also represent sin; transgression and peril. Ten being the perfect number, eleven represents the exceeding of both. It is interesting to note that eleven when broken down ( 1+1=2) comprises the Two of duality. Number eleven is a master vibration and as such should not be reduced to a single number. People with this number could be both idealistic and visionary, and they are attracted to the unknown. They can be both unusual, interesting and magnetic personalities. Eleven bring the gift of spiritual inheritance, is gifted as the "Light-Bearer". It is the number of the Light within all. Strengthened by the love of Peace, gentleness, sensitivity and insight. Greatest facility is the awareness of Universal relationship. Is related to the energy of Oppositions and the Balancing needed in order to achieve synthesis. Eleven is The PeaceMaker... Colours: Gold, Salmon, Prune, White and Black. www.greatdreams.com/eleven/num11.htm
