Of course, we all know what the song "Pet" is about.
However, when I first heard it, it gave me the chills. It made me think of the man (an uncle) that molested me as a child. It seems as though the molester is speaking to his victim. Telling the child he's there to "protect" her, not to listen to the rabble, what other voice say (the voices in her head, knowing something is wrong), listen to him, he's the only one that really cares about her, trying to make her believe he cares about her.
He does "isolate" her in the sense that she cannot speak of what he has done.
Just go back to sleep and pay no attention to what he will do.
I know some of you are abuse survivors. Can anyone else see this "tone" in this song?

Absolutely. If you take away the war references, this could definitely be a song about child sexual abuse, since most sexual abuse takes place at night. The line "Go back to sleep" is certainly creepy in such a context. Also, "I'll be the one to protect you from a will to survive and a voice of reason" could be like the abuser causing so much pain that the victim feels as if death is the only escape, even though reason would tell him or her that survival is everything.

I can really see where your coming from, i myself have not been a victim of this but i have plenty of time on my hands to think.
Another view I used to have about this song was being in a "paradies". Im not sure for myself but i think everyone at times wants nothing better then to be with someone who feels exactly the same as you do for them. The song for me would show security and passion... it sounds odd i know but that used to be my veiw of the song until emotive that is/

I don't find any interpretations of songs odd. I love hearing about other people's views of songs. It's amazing how different people can see so many different things within a song....which is cool.
That's what I love about good music (especially APC and Tool), the listener can take it and find meanings within it that is very personal to them. The lyrics can be interpretted by them to fill their needs, their desires.

I also thought the song was about the shroud the gov and media try to pull over our heads. Like "go back to sleep" was saying hey don't pay attention to what's really going on, just be influenced by what we show you. "I'll be the one to protect...." is a symbol of the security and protection people feel from the government, that IMO isn't really there. And "pay no mind to the rabble" was saying don't listen to what the rest of the world is telling you, we know what the right thing to do is.
The line "swing it to the rythm of a new world order", IMO, was a low blow at bush sr.'s presidency. I think he was quoted using the phrase "new world order".
Either way, this song is amazing. The music really conveys the message/feeling (whatever you want to be) of the song. And I think everyone would agree that "Counting Bodies...." was a nice Part 2 of "Pet".
As with all Maynard work, this song can mean so many different things. It is truly difficult to try and just put one spin on the lyrics. I'm just glad there are multiple ideas here. I know where your coming from Halo. I myself was abused in my childhood. I wan't sexually abused. But I was beaten and severly mentally absued. This song does hit a chord on the feeling as well. TGFM (thank god for maynard)

"Safe from pain and truth and choice" Is something that also refers to abuse to me. People that hurt you never want you to realize the truth and do something against it!

Yes. Especially as a child. They want you to think that their "truth" is the truth. Anything you are feeling or thinking is wrong. They are the adults and they know better than you.

WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY back when The Thirteenth Step came out...people all over were saying "Pet sounds like Donal Rumsfield talking to us...." Which people replid, "Maynard getting political? No way!"
I didnt believe the hype either. I was like, "No way is this song about politics or shit..."
Hahahaha....and we all know what APC did with Pet...they remixed into a war song...hahahahahhaha
