Alison, honey. Nice to have you here and participating on the board.
I have one small favor to ask. As much as we all admire MJK, I prefer that we do not refer to him as a god or even almost a god. He's human, just like the rest of us. An extremely talented human, but human nonetheless. It's really not a good idea to put him up on that god pedestal.
You're welcome to talk about him, his music, his words, etc., all you want here. You can even gush about him if you want. But let's keep it on a human level and not hold him up as some kind god, okay?
Thanks.
I'm moving your poll to MJK discussion where it's better suited.

There are a lot of great voices out there, but I think Maynard brings something to the board that's uniquely....him/his. I don't see anyone being able to do what he's done for music

i like how he can stir the pot and bring out all these emotions through his pieces. for instance, the Joni Mitchell cover on emotive - when his voice starts to sound shakey, you can feel the pain and disappointment. the first time i heard it, i got all teary. it's hard to take a cover and make it your own, but he does it so well.

I agree w/ roving. I feel that's what seperates MJK from others. He has this brilliant ability in manipulating his voice & is able to bring out all these emotions with a sense of pathos. Even when he's angry you can still hear a depth of longing in him. That's what I feel makes him much more...accessible( if that's the correct term to use?) compared to other vocalists. In how he's able to bring these emotions which everyone can identify with. It's interesting cause I was watching MTV's Headbangers Ball just the other day. And I couldn't help but be horrified at how all the bands on there sounded exactly the same. Loud thrashing guitars, guttural roars & yells. Which is ironic since Tool came from pretty much the same thing. But if you listen to Opiate you can hear the depth of emotions swirling in his voice. When I first heard Tool, I always thought of the music as this vast darkness. Like a huge void of limbo. And then came this light to show you the way. And it was MJK. Real mythical, (& corny sounding) I know. But that's what Tool ( and , of course, APC) mean to me.

^ I agree. Very well expressed Incognito. I have very few strong vocal inspirations. I look deep into a persons vocal art and try and read what they are trying to express. I always need to hear passion. If there is no passion there is no meaning to me. He feels everything he sings. Few artists really do that anymore and they do sound the same. I think Roving-Eye said it well above: i like how he can stir the pot and bring out all these emotions through his pieces. That Joni Mitchell song he covered, I can listen to over and over again and always in complete silence. I think it was a great way for him to express what he can really do with his voice and how sharp he is with harmonys. They are very unique. I admit, I mostly need music behind the voice to REALLY feel the song. But I didn't even notice with that. It just didnt't need it. His voice carried so well. If I had to describe his voice in a few short words they would be passionate, unique, honest, deep, thoughtful, beautiful, sensual and endearing. Just like the man himself.

If I had to describe his voice in a few short words they would be passionate, unique, honest, deep, thoughtful, beautiful, sensual and endearing. Just like the man himself. Are you sure about this? NOt saying he's not all those things. But you really can't know the man just by the music. Sorry. Once again, this is one of my pet peeves. I've worked with enough rock stars to know you cannot judge their character by their music. I don't mind anyone expressing their opinion, I just have an adversity to anyone expressing a person's character as fact if they don't know the person. Not meant as an offense to you Ravenous. It's just, as I said a very large pet peeve of mine. I would hope that Maynard is all those things, but we really don't know, do we?

No we don't. Your right. And I certainly didn't mean that as a fact. No way. Like you said I don't know him. I hope hes like that, of course. Its just how I see him through his art. In an almost imagined sense. I don't know him personally, and as a musician and artist myself and working with so many of them you can't judge them purely through thier art. I completely agree. Unfortunatly, some of them are the complete opposite to beautiful. But I do see him as passionate (the way he talks about life, learning, art and music). No offence taken. I'm not saying I know THE MAN. Of course not. I'm just expressing how I feel when I listen to his voice and how he inspires me. From what I gather he as 'the man' is funny, arrogant and obssesed with wine. (Thats a joke!) xx Really...I know what your trying to say. I think I could of ended it a little better perhaps. Sometimes you forget how its going to be read by someone who doesn't know you and how you express certain things. I didn't mean to stir up any 'pet peeves'. Lots of love. x

No problem ravenous. I like how you explained this: "I'm just expressing how I feel when I listen to his voice and how he inspires me'Love back at ya!

his voice is one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. My perfect boyfriend would have to have a voice like this. He doesn't need to sing, though. Unfortunately the perfect boyfriend is an illusion, but it's great to dream about it

I think that anyone had the ability and means to create what he did, but he had the vision and dedication to do it. How he managed to do it I'll never completely understand. Trent Reznor is successfully trying, and it seems that even Manson is coming around in my opinion. I've come to depend on Keenan's voice in my ear, however. Not only is he the creator, he is the creation. It is that beautiful sythnesis that I hear in his voice. Lately it has been turning my brain inside-out.
