Hi everyone, I just had a question I wanted to ask that's been bothering me since I first saw it on SPIN how many months ago. It was for the review of eMOTIVe last february, if I remember correctly. Well, the thing is there was a picture of the the band there w/ some caption stating they were "emo rockers". Which sort of horrified me because I never considered APC to be "emo" or any label for that matter. (Especially since APC & Tool are beyond any labeling, in my opinion.)  Anyhow, so there's this picture w/ a caption underneath calling them "emo rockers" or something of that sort which surprised me since I feel "emo" is more like Conor Oberst. And I never could get into "emo" myself. (In fact, I despise it.) But since seeing that caption...I can't help but wonder. Are APC considered "emo rock"?? Cause if they are...well, I guess I'll be the first to say I was wrong..not to mention a moron for dissing it. And I know it's short for "emotional". But, c'mon, since when isn't music emotional? Actually...I take that back. I can name a few. Anyways, my question is..."Would you consider APC emo rock?" |

Hi, no.
At least, I do not consider them "emo." For me, emo means bands like AFI. Whining in place of actual vocals. "emotional," in this case, is a euphemism for "melodramatic teenager or twenty-something who has yet to grow out of their teenage mentality."
I'm indifferent as to what a magazine or crowd labels music. I'll listen to it if it moves me.

I hate emo. I don't think they are emo. I just consider thier music art. Brilliant art at that.

Thx fer all yr responses. I know what you mean about not paying any attention to what "rags" say about this or that, what's cool, etc. If I can "feel" it & relate to the music in any way, shape, or form...then the band accomplished what they set out to do.
Seeing that caption startled me, though. But it's good to know I'm not the only one who feels the same way. Thx.

APC dosent sound like them. I guess with songs like Brena,Magdalena, & Sleeping Beauty people think it is emo cause it is about a woman or a goddess. Stereotypical bastards. |

Here's a definition of EMO that I think fits pretty well. (EMO is short for emotional): "EMO music is somewhat like punk, but less of a grunge sound. The "emo" people have their own style, too and they usually hate it when others call them "punk." A lot of them wear semi-tight shirts with straight legged jeans or Dickies. They wear a lot of black and red, too. Basically, it's the new-aged punk style, more nerdy, and less dramatic."Here's a description of the "look": "you go to an emo show, all the guys are wearing girls pants, & their hair is all long & goes over their face a little in the front. girls hair cut really short & spiked up in the back, with two long straightened peices in the front. keychains & bandanas are a big thing to.'For a better description of EMO hair styles.......se Trent Reznors' new look.  |

its interesting you bring that up... some of my friends consider me emo just cuz i am infatuated by apc and tool. some consider me goth for this too...I consider them alternative rock, and dont think im anything, but just different from everyone else. Others dont learn to appreciate the music i listen to, and just jump to conclusion of who i am. it really annoys me.

okay ready...IN MY OWN FUCKEN PERSONAL OPINION....(yeah thats right what I think)
EMO is inferior to any kind of music out there...i cant take a band like taking back sunday seriously...i cannot stand "emo" its all a bunch of water down sappy kids that cant play anything extremeley complicated such as a time signature besides 4/4...as a musician i just cant accept emo as a genre of music..
ANYWAYS..APC IS NOT EMO...APC IS NOT ANYTHING....NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE THEM AND NO ONE EVER WILL...i hate fucken categories...
Off topic: just like APC i believe TOOL can not be put into a category!!!!! c'mon do u think these bands like being labeled and put into categories with other bands that are of lesser quality? just some food for thought
