In this thread, we will discuss volunteer experiences - either something you used to do, or something you're involved in now.
When I was in high school, I volunteered at a cat shelter, but now I'm trying to contact the director of the Pug Rescue of New England to see if she needs people. I love most animals, especially dogs, but the pug is one of my favorite dogs and I think it would be cool to help them find good homes.

Awesome Alida. If I ever get a pet it will only be a rescue animal. I can't say I've done as much as I should or would like, but I volunteered as a mentor to undergrad biology majors when I was a senior (just kinda tutored them & helped them with their homework). I also went to several rallies on campus, including one to encourage student voting. I participated in the march on the capital to protest the budget cuts on the Bright Futures scholarship and the Florida Prepaid College program (damn Jeb, I hate him). Of course Jeb didn't show, but sent out some 'representative'. That's right, I live in Tallahassee.

Well, let's see. There's been a lot of volunteering in my life. Recently due to health problems, I had to cut back, but I'll be getting back in to it soon. I volunteered for a few years at a local school helping them with their "aftercare" program. I would go straight from work to the school and stay with the kids who's parents worked late. I loved being with the kids, but it became very frustrating because of the parents. So many wouldn't show up for quite awhile after they were supposed to be off work. Whenever I had to call any parents because their child was sick....I was told there was nothing they could do...they were at work and I would have to deal with it until they got off work. I hated those parents. But I dearly loved the children. I have volunteered for every presidential campaign since before I could even vote. Pounding the pavement, working the phone lines, working the polls, etc. I used to volunteer at this church (but not for the church). This certain church fed the poor every Wednesday and would help with that. Each week one of us took turns cooking and bringing in the meals. Then we all helped pass it out. The church is no longer doing this. But I do try and get to our local food pantry when I can and do whatever they need. I've done some work with a neighborhood close to me renovating old homes. And also have done some work with different organizations that build homes for people that cannot afford a home of their own. I even got to meet Jimmy Carter while working on a "Habitat for Humanity" home. Right now I am working on doing what I what I can do to volunteer and help Barack Obama, my state Senator. This is a man to watch!! He's amazing!

It's hard work L, but it is a blast. The few times I have done it, it was this wonderful comradery amongst the volunteers. It was a great time.
If you get a chance, try it!
